丁基防水嵌缝胶名称的由来MS源于日本Ianeka钟化公司开发硅烷改性聚合物，该聚合物商品名为[Ianeka MS Polymer，以该聚合物为基础生产的单组分或双组分密封胶称为MS密封胶。MS密封胶现已纳人日本JIS 5758标准，称为改性硅酮(Metamorphic Silicone)，并成为日本密封胶的独立类别，即SR类、IB类、MS类、PS类、UA类、AC类密封胶。丁基防水嵌缝胶主要原料为硅烷封端的聚氧化丙烯醚，分子主链由C-O-C键组成，遵循高分子化学命名原则，丁基防水嵌缝胶应称为硅改性聚醚胶。严格来说，改性硅酮不是对硅酮进行改性属于非硅酮类产品m。
